Evidence
I created a safe and inclusive environment for diverse learners by initially giving verbal instructions in both English and Spanish (using Google Translate), as well as providing written directions in both languages in the PowerPoint for all students to feel comfortable with understanding in their own language. Wednesday and Thursday, I co-taught with Mr. Osmack as we began breaking down the creative writing assignment, starting with “Once upon a time…” The next step required students to include specifics of who, what, when, where, and why within their story correlating with their vignette. Mr. Osmack and I went through an example with the class developing a fun story. I asked the class, “Who is going to be in the story?” Students replied, “John Wick” and then I asked, “What is he doing?” They said that he was in search of a magic broom. Next, I asked, “Where is this taking place?” They answered, “In the forest.” I continued this in front of the class while Mr. Osmack wrote down the story. I then had the students simplify their understanding of what they needed to include in their vignette narratives. This process covered “I do, we do, they do” constructions. I walked around aiding students with whatever they needed in their creative writing process. I had the chance to work one-on-one with bilingual students as well as those on the spectrum. Reaching out to them in this way helped them grasp the concepts. I have met the TQS 2 Element B components through demonstrating awareness and commitment to respect the diversity of all students by creating an inclusive atmosphere that promotes equal opportunity for everyone to succeed. One of my greatest challenges is communicating instructions to students who speak Spanish, and by working with them individually, I am gaining insight of alternative ways to convey the coursework despite the language barrier.
